Fire Protection Engineering

WPI's Master of Science in Fire Protection Engineering and Graduate Certificate in Fire Protection Engineering adapt previous academic and professional experiences into a cohesive plan of study. Programs are designed to be flexible enough to meet your unique educational objectives and professional goals.

The past few decades have been a period of dramatic change in the science and practice of fire protection engineering. The evolution has been toward performance-based design, codes and standards, and various forms of fire modeling applications. All of these changes have created a need for the continuing professional development of practicing engineers.

WPI and Fire Protection Engineering

• 1979 - Launched on-campus Fire Protection Engineering program
• 1993 - Launched Fire Protection Engineering distance learning program
• 1st to offer graduate level distance learning
• 400+ graduates
• 25+ countries represented in student population

WPI Research Saves Lives

On the campus of WPI, the research conducted in labs focuses on the lessons learned from 9/11 and other tragedies like the 1999 Worcester cold storage inferno that killed six firefighters. With help of federal grants, faculty and students are developing new technology to assist first responders on the front lines.

Department of Fire Protection Engineering

All distance-based fire protection engineering programs are offered through the Department of Fire Protection Engineering, which focuses on teaching current theories and practices, and conducts research to uncover new knowledge about fire behavior and fire protection methods. Bringing together talents from many disciplines with a common focus on fire safety issues, this leading-edge program takes a unique approach to fire protection engineering research and practice.
